Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Board

Policy Statement

The Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Board (IAB) is a University-wide Standing Committee appointed by the President, not reporting to the Academic Senate of The University of Texas at Dallas. The Board serves as an advisory body to the President and the Director of Athletics on matters related to intercollegiate athletics, including compliance with university, conference, and NCAA rules and other relevant regulations. The IAB provides recommendations on policies and procedures that support a thriving athletics program at the university.

The responsibilities of the IAB include but are not limited to:

  • >Reviewing and recommending policies that assist in the operation of the athletics program,
  • >Reviewing and approving sports schedules,
  • >Serving as a liaison to the academic constituencies on campus,
  • >Reviewing compliance matters that affect the athletics program,
  • >Reviewing the academic progress and retention of student athletes to ensure compliance with NCAA eligibility standards, and
  • Reviewing the financial resources of the athletics program and assessing the appropriate utilization of such resources.

The council shall meet at least once per fall, spring, and summer semester. A representative from the Office of the Registrar will be appointed to provide data and support on matters related to the academic progress and retention of student athletes.

Membership

The IAB membership is comprised of 17 voting members appointed by the President. The appointed members with voting privileges include the following:

  • Senior Woman Administrator, a designated position within the Department of Athletics
  • Head Coach (Women's)
  • Head Coach (Men's)
  • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative (Female Athlete)
  • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative (Male Athlete)
  • Faculty Athletic Representative
  • Three faculty nominated by the Academic Senate
  • Staff member nominated by Staff Council
  • Undergraduate student nominated by Student Government
  • Graduate student nominated by Graduate Student Assembly
  • Student Affairs Representative
  • Enrollment Management Representative
  • Financial Aid Representative
  • Assistant Director for Compliance
  • Dean for Undergraduate Education (or their designee)

The non-voting members include:

  • Director of Athletics
  • University Register (or their designee)

The representatives of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee shall be selected from teams that are not represented by the two head coaches on the IAB. The faculty members shall be nominated from the membership of the General Faculty (as defined in policy UTDPP1088 - Faculty Governance) by the Academic Senate. The Faculty Athletic Representative shall be appointed by the President.

The staff and student representatives shall be appointed by the President in consultation with the Director of Athletics and the leaders of the respective administrative units. Faculty nominated by the Academic Senate serve two-year appointments to the IAB from September 1 to August 31 and may be reappointed for subsequent terms. If for any reason a Committee member resigns, the President shall appoint another individual to serve the remainder of the unexpired term.

The Chair and the Vice Chair will be appointed by the President with recommendations provided by the Director of Athletics. The Chair and the Vice Chair will serve one-year terms and may be reappointed for subsequent terms.

Committee Responsible University Official

The Vice President and Chief of Staff shall serve as the Responsible University Official for this committee.
